Advanced Practitioner (Public, Community and Voluntary Sector Studies)

These programmes are designed to develop the professional and personal skills of people who are working full or part time in public, community or voluntary sector organisations and groups or who are volunteering and draw upon work place experiences. By acquiring an understanding of social problems and solutions and familiarity with academic research in key fields, students can apply their learning to their own context.

Entry requirements

A 2.1 Honours degree or above or acceptable, equivalent professional qualifications; references. Candidates without a degree but with suitable experience in Public, Community or Voluntary sectors or in working with abuse issues can apply under the APEL (Accreditation of Prior Experimental Learning) scheme.

Course modules

Core units: Understanding public; community and voluntary sector contexts; academic skills; reflexive practitioner; dissertation. Three of these elective units: applied psychology; community leadership; social sustainability and working with change in communities; violence and aggression in society; strategic management practice; corporate financial strategy; crime and victimology; applied ethical issues in professional life; globalisation and social change; advanced research practice; sustaining and organisation; the commercial sex industry; learning in outdoor environments; skills in counseling and communication; professional mentoring.

Assessment methods

Assessment is based on coursework.
