This course develops students' practical moving image skills alongside critical knowledge and understanding in the creative industries. The course provides a broad grounding in the study of the moving image from different genres, historical periods and cultural origins, embracing the forms of documentary, fiction, animation, and experimental practice. This acts as a basis for students to develop and explore their own ideas.

Entry requirements

A good Honours degree, or equivalent qualification, in an appropriate subject. Applications from candidates with appropriate qualifications and a minimum of 3 years work experience are welcomed. Those without formal qualifications need to demonstrate relevant work experience and the ability to study at postgraduate level. Applicants must possess competence in English language and we normally require grade C GCSE or an equivalent qualification. IELTS 6.5 (with minimum 6.0 in all 4 components) or TOEFL internet based 87 (with at least 21 in listening and writing, 22 in speaking and 23 in reading).

Course modules

Modules include: Film research; scripting producing and directing; moving image practice; film professional project; film dissertation.

Assessment methods

Assessment is by coursework including practical projects and written work. There are no exams. For the dissertation project, students elect to do a thesis or a mixed mode theory/practice project.
