Secondary Education (English)
At the University through sessions which include: Lesson planning, teaching strategies and classroom management, reflection on experiences and sharing of successful practice, identifying strengths and weaknesses for further development, developing and applying subject knowledge in schools through: observations of a variety of lessons before teaching begins, guidance with lesson preparation, from experienced English mentors, and oral and written feedback on teaching. The course leads to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) on completion of skills tests.
Degree (2.2 or above) in a relevant subject. GCSE in mathematics and English grade C or above. It is also recommended that students undertake at least 2 weeks work experience within a secondary English classroom before applying.
School experience 1; school experience 2; specialism subject education (2 modules, includes professional studies); school experience totalling 120 days.
Subject studies are assessed by a portfolio of coursework and a school-based special study (a teaching resource). Progressive developments of teaching skills are recorded using criteria referenced assessment proforma. Professional studies are assessed by a range of written tasks. Observation of the students, teaching and evaluative discussions with course tutors and school based mentors and teachers. Students undertake skills tests in orders to gain Qualified Teacher Status.
