This course enables students to gain in-depth knowledge and skills in a range of advanced topics in computer science. The course will provide students with an understanding of key concepts in computer programming, programming paradigms and software development and design, with a balance of computer science theory and practical experience. Students will also gain an under-standing of the professional, legal and ethical framework applicable to careers in computing.

Entry requirements

2nd Class Honours degree in computer science or a computer-related discipline including engineering and science and a substantial exposure to programming and IT. Applicants with degrees in other disciplines, with several years of relevant industrial experience considered. Non-native English speakers need an IELTS score of 6.5 or above. Applicants must have competence in English language and we normally require grade C GCSE or an equivalent qualification. The most common English language requirements for international students are IELTS 6.5 (with minimum 6.0 in all 4 components) or TOEFL internet based 87 (with at least 21 in listening and writing, 22 in speaking and 23 in reading).

Course modules

Modules include: Advanced topics in computer science; distributed systems; individual project; interaction and visualisation; software development.

Assessment methods

Although there will be some tests, and a group viva as part of the software development module, there will be no written exams - you will be assessed entirely through coursework. As well as your independent project and dissertation, you will be assessed through presentations, reports, learning logbooks, practical software development assignments and group assignments.
