Environmental Pollution Control

This course examines the characteristics and sources of the major environmental pollutants. Students on this course develop an understanding of the health, ecological and climatic impact of a wide range of pollutants and the scientific principles behind these effects. The course is taught at the Centre for Environmental Studies, with regular keynote lectures by expert internal and external speakers and involves site visits and field research.

Entry requirements

A good Honours degree, or equivalent qualification, in an appropriate subject. Applications from candidates with appropriate qualifications and a minimum of 3 years work experience are welcomed. Those without formal qualifications need to demonstrate relevant work experience and the ability to study at postgraduate level. Applicants must possess competence in English language and we normally require grade C GCSE or an equivalent qualification. The most common English language requirements for international students are IELTS 6.5 (with minimum 6.0 in all 4 components) or TOEFL internet based 87 (with at least 21 in listening and writing, 22 in speaking and 23 in reading).

Course modules

Modules include: Atmospheric and noise pollution; contaminated land remediation and solid waste management; water and wastewater; professional experience; research methods; research project.

Assessment methods

Assessment is a mixture of coursework, written examination and dissertation.The project is assessed by two internal examiners and one external examiner.
