Applied Public Health
From TB to tapeworms, from sexual health to safety in the workplace, public health is a crucial issue in every society in the world and a hugely diverse science. Our course qualifies you to work as a public health practitioner, and is designed to give you a solid body of both theoretical and practical knowledge and experience which will help you make a seamless transition into the workplace.
A good Honours degree, or equivalent qualification, in an appropriate subject. We also consider candidates with other relevant qualifications and individuals with a minimum of 3 years' work experience. Those without formal qualifications need to demonstrate relevant work experience and the ability to study at postgraduate level. International entry requirements: We accept the equivalent of the above from a recognised overseas qualification. English language requirements: Students must have competence in English language and we normally require grade C GCSE or an equivalent qualification. The most common English Language requirements for international students are IELTS 6.5 (with minimum 6.0 in all 4 components) or TOEFL internet based 87 (with at least 21 in listening and writing, 22 in speaking and 23 in reading). Middlesex also offers a pre-sessional course that ranges from 5-17 weeks, depending on your level of English. Successful completion of this course would meet English language entry requirements.
Modules include: Applied epidemiology; challenges in global public health; environmental and public health; health economics; health promotion and health development; policy and public health strategy; research methodology and dissertation.
You will be assessed through written and oral exams and your research project and dissertation, as well as essays and other written assignments, case study work, posters and presentations; your dissertation will consist of a research proposal, a 12,000-word thesis, a 20-minute presentation and a learning log, all of which will be assessed.
