Newcastle University

Secondary Education (French with Spanish)

This course prepares students to teach throughout the 1118 age range. During this intensive PGCE programme, two thirds of student's time is based in schools. Training focuses on the development of the knowledge, skills and understanding expected of newly qualified teachers. Subject work undertaken in partnership schools is underpinned and extended by a linked programme of curriculum studies in the University. A process of reflective enquiry underpins the development of teaching skills, as well as forming the basis for the written work submitted. In order to be recommended for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) students must demonstrate compliance with all the specified standards, including successful completion of the National College for Teaching and Leadership's (NCTL) tests in numeracy and literacy.

Entry requirements

Applicants should hold a 2.2 Honours degree or above, with at least 50 per cent of the degree in the subject that they intend to teach (closely related degree subjects may be accepted). Applicants applying for a PGCE in a modern language subject should have spent a year abroad as part of their degree. In addition, foreign nationals applying for a modern languages PGCE should normally have spent 6 months living in the UK and had employment as a foreign language assistant in a state school in England. Students also require GCSE or O level passes (Grades AC) in English language and mathematics or equivalent before commencement of the PGCE course. It is also a requirement that they have spent at least a few recent working days in a UK secondary classroom prior to application.
