Newcastle University

Secondary Education (Science with Biology specialism)

This programme, two thirds of a student's time is based in schools. Training focuses on the development of the knowledge, skills and understanding expected of newly qualified teachers. Subject work undertaken in partnership schools is underpinned and extended by a linked programme of curriculum studies in the University. A process of reflective enquiry underpins the development of teaching skills, as well as forming the basis for the written work submitted. In order to be recommended for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) students must demonstrate compliance with all the specified standards, including successful completion of the National College for Teaching and Leadership's (NCTL) tests in numeracy and literacy.

Entry requirements

Applicants should hold a 2nd Class Honours degree or above, with at least 50 per cent of the degree in the subject that they intend to teach (closely related degree subjects may be accepted). Applicants also require GCSE or O level passes (Grades AC) in English language and mathematics or equivalent before commencement of the PGCE course. It is also a requirement that they have spent at least a few recent working days in a UK secondary classroom prior to application. This will inform the application and any subsequent performance in the selection process.
