Applied Linguistics and Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL)
The course is designed for applicants who wish to improve their knowledge, skills and professional performance in Teaching English to Speakers of other languages (TESOL). You will develop in-depth knowledge and understanding of TESOL theories and methodologies, and research skills. This course has a strong emphasis on teacher development, social interaction, spoken discourse and engagement with the language and technology.
A 2.1 Honours degree or higher, or an international equivalent, in English language, English literature, linguistics or a similarly related subject. Applicants without a language-related degree, or with a lower degree classification, but with at least 2 years of full-time language teaching experience will also be considered. Applicants whose 1st language is not English require IELTS 6.5 overall (with at least 6.5 in writing), or equivalent.
Modules include: e-learning for languages; computer assisted language learning; core issues in second language acquisition; thinking skills in ELT; task-based language teaching; classroom discourse and teacher development; discourse analysis for English language teachers; an introduction to corpus linguistics; multimodal interaction in the language classroom; language planning, policy and practice; analysing the media: theory and practice.
