Biotechnology and Business Enterprise

Our Biotechnology and Business Enterprise MRes is a research-based course with a taught component that is equivalent to an MSc. It provides a springboard into a career that involves a working knowledge of scientific research. The course is for students with a BSc in the life sciences or another science discipline. It is also for intercalating and qualified MBBS or BDS students. You can study the course as a stand-alone qualification or as an entry route to a PhD or MD.

Entry requirements

2.1 Honours degree, or international equivalent, in a science discipline or an MBBS/BDS degree with high grades. Practical laboratory work experience is desirable, but not essential. Applicants whose 1st language is not English will need IELTS 6.5 (with 6.5 in all sub-sections), or equivalent. International applicants may need an ATAS (Academic Technology Approval Scheme) clearance certificate. This will need to be obtained before the applicant can get a visa or study on this programme. The ATAS requirement will be in the offer letter.

Modules include: Medical biotechnology, enterprise and innovation in industrial bioscience; research skills and principles for the biosciences; project. Optional modules: Ageing and health; the biological study of behaviour; applied ethology; applied immunobiology of human disease; applying the 3 rs to in-vivo experimental techniques; bioinformatics theory and practice; biology of ageing; cancer studies; cardiovascular science in health and disease; cell cycle control and cell signalling in health and disease; clinical epidemiology; cognitive neuroscience; current research trends in musculoskeletal disease; developmental genetics; diabetes; drug discovery and development; experimental medicine and therapeutics; genetic medicine; genetics of common disease; medical genomics; mitochondrial biology and medicine; molecular microbiology; nanomaterials in healthcare technologies; neuromuscular diseases: bench to bedside; protein structure and function; sensory systems; scientific basis of neurological disorders; stem cells and regenerative medicine; surgical anatomy; systems biology; toxicology; transplantation sciences.
