The programme provides a springboard into a career that involves a working knowledge of scientific research in academia and industry. The programme is a research-based qualification with a taught component that is of an equivalent standard to an MSc. It provides training in contemporary medical and molecular biosciences through subject-knowledge modules related to and including medical microbiology, professional and key skills training and a 24-week laboratory-based research project.
A 2.1 Honours degree, or international equivalent, in a science discipline, or an MBBS degree with high grades; practical laboratory experience is desirable, but not essential; applicants whose 1st language is not English require a minimum of IELTS 6.5 (with a minimum of 6.5 in all sub-sections) or equivalent; international applicants require an ATAS (Academic Technology Approval Scheme) clearance certificate prior to obtaining their visa and to study on this programme.

Optional modules: ageing and health; applied ethology; applied immunobiology of human disease; applying the 3 Rs to in-vivo experimental techniques; bioinformatics theory and practice; the biological basis of psychiatric illness and its treatment; comparative cognition: information processing in humans and other animals; the biological study of behaviour; biology of ageing; biomaterials and tissue engineering; bioscience research development and enterprise; cancer studies; cardiovascular science in health and disease; cell cycle control and cell signalling in health and disease; clinical epidemiology; current research trends in musculoskeletal disease; developmental genetics; diabetes; drug discovery and development; experimental medicine and therapeutics; genetic medicine; genetics of common disease; global health; medical technology innovation; molecular microbiology; neuromuscular diseases: bench to bedside; protein structure and function; sensory systems ; scientific basis of neurological disorders; stem cells and regenerative medicine; surgical anatomy; systems biology; toxicology; transplantation sciences.
