Secondary Education (Modern Foreign Languages)
The course is designed to give students with skills in modern foreign languages (normally forming at least 50 per cent of your 1st degree), the ability to teach across the 11-16 age range and, in the longer term, progress their career by giving them the subject knowledge to become a modern foreign languages subject leader or head of department. You are introduced to a range of innovative strategies through which new technologies are being used in school to enhance learning quality. You are also taught about the use of modern foreign languages across the secondary curriculum, and how modern foreign languages can be integrated into other subject areas. The course includes 60 credits at Master's level for attainment of the full PGCE.
A good Honours degree (2.2 or above) of which 50 per cent is language related, or a recognised equivalent qualification. GCSEs in English language and mathematics at grade C or above are also required before applying. Recent and relevant school experience is required. All applicants will be required to obtain Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) clearance, a Suitability to Teach declaration and meet the requirements for capacity to teach.
Introduction to secondary teaching; learning and teaching in modern foreign languages (MFL) (Master�s level); education and professional studies (Master�s level); professional school experience (SE1); final professional school experience (SE2).
Assessment in MFL (modern foreign languages) is by coursework and through the evaluation and monitoring of professional classroom competencies. The preference in this course is for an approach to education which emphasises workshop learning and investigation, collaborative group work and practical experience. A combination of lectures and tutorials are used alongside support from individual tutors, in well-resourced rooms.
