This programme gives students an opportunity to develop historical knowledge and research skills beyond undergraduate level; it is suitable for recent history graduates or historians currently working in the field in a variety of roles seeking to pursue an academic career or develop their understanding of a particular area of history; it can also assist teachers of history at secondary level to work with older students at tertiary or higher education levels; the course consists of a series of research seminars; students are allocated a tutor to supervise the research project which forms the basis of an original piece of historical research.
2.1 Honours degree in history or a history-related subject including a dissertation in history or a history-related area.
The MPhil is awarded on the completion of a 50,000 word thesis, which is examined by an external expert in the subject area; at the midpoint of the programme, students complete a 4,000 word report which includes a literature review, an outline of the topic and an indication of your future research objectives; this report is examined by a member of Newman University or University of Leicester to assess the student's fitness to progress to the thesis writing stage.
