Victorian Studies

This course fuses historical, literary and philosophical approaches to the Victorian period to provide a deep and holistic understanding of the Victorian era.

Entry requirements

Good relevant 1st degree (2.2 or above).

Course modules

Core modules: Research methods in humanities; introduction to victorian studies; dissertation of 15,000 words; the urban space: Towns and cities in an age of social change.
One applied interdisciplinary module to be chosen from: The gothic in literature, drama and architecture; faith, dissent and nonconformity; the empire, the union and identity.

Assessment methods

The course will run one evening per week over 12 months with 4 to 5 Saturday sessions, along with additional online activities run via Newman's Virtual Learning Environment (VLE). There will be a further 3 months for the completion of the dissertation. Evening classes will take place at Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery and the Saturday sessions will be taught at Newman.

Sponsorship information

Newman has 13 £10,000 scholarships for students who start a full or part-time Masters degree in September 2015. These scholarships are available to students who graduated from their undergraduate degree (at Newman or elsewhere) with a 2i or above in 2015. The scholarships will cover the total cost of tuition fees and provide a contribution towards living costs whilst students complete their Masters degree. These scholarships will only be available in 2015 as a national system for postgraduate tuition fee loans will be in place in 2016.
