Applied Linguistics for Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL)

The programme is for experienced teachers of English as a 2nd or foreign language; the programme offers a broad introduction to many of the key concepts and theories which underpin language teaching; it develops knowledge of language and language study, and also examines theories which might lie behind teaching practices; students are encouraged to reflect upon the relationship between theory and practice in their own professional context; the programme also helps students to become aware of the personal, social, and political consequences of their work as an English language teacher in their home country.

Entry requirements

An Honours degree or equivalent; at least 2 years' appropriate teaching experience; applicants whose 1st language is not English require an IELTS score of 6.5 or TOEFL equivalent; those without the required level of English may be asked to undertake additional English language training.

Course modules

Modules include: critical research skills; language linguistics and classroom language learning; dissertation; plus options.
