Professional Practice in Sport Coaching

The course provides a basis for career development into, or through, the sport coaching programme. There is particular emphasis on developing a critical understanding of sport coaching through the examination of underpinning theories, models, concepts and research skills pertinent to coaching practice and overall management of the coaching process. Students will, through the taught programme, assess and critique the impact of current coaching models and systems utilised in the development of coaching expertise. In addition students will develop knowledge of high performance coaching and critique the application of sport science principles to this context. More specifically the programme will promote application and critical evaluation of vocationally relevant concepts to the work place and the sports coaching role through a work-based learning approach.

Entry requirements

A 2nd Class Honours degree or above in sport coaching, sport sciences, physical education, or a sport/leisure related course. Experience in sport coaching (a minimum of at least 2 years sustained coaching experience) and commitment to coaching within a sport coaching organisation. Where no 1st degree has been obtained there should be evidence of an ongoing commitment to sport coaching (6 - 8 years). It is recommended that the student has obtained a level 2 coaching qualification or equivalent.

Course modules

Modules include: the expert coach in a high performance setting; coach development; academic recognition for continuing professional development in sport coaching; sport coaching work based project; sport coaching work based dissertation.
