Modern Foreign Languages for Primary Teachers

The course is intended mostly for primary teachers who need to upskill their own linguistic competences in French or Spanish to teach the language with confidence over all 4 years of KS2 leading to KS3. The programme has been designed in line with The Language Up-skilling Framework syllabus (DCSF, 2009). The programme enhances competencies and confidence in teaching a foreign language (French or Spanish) and aims to: support professional development in language learning at Key Stage 2; develop learner's knowledge of 2nd language acquisition and 2nd language learning theories; develop learner's linguistic competencies in all 4 language skills (oral, aural, written and reading); enhance the learners cultural awareness of the country of language study. Teaching and learning will be experiential in nature, centred on the application of learning in the classroom and through evidence-based assessment of progression and achievement. This approach will ensure that the workplace, the principal site of learning, provides an opportunity for the practical application of knowledge and skills development through action and work-based projects.
