Accredited by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) and the Chartered Association of Building Engineers (CABE), the course is recognised for the quality and relevance of its course content. The course develops the skills you need to become a professional building surveyor, providing you with the academic foundation for a career in industry. This course is designed as a fast-track conversion course for graduates from disciplines unrelated to construction and property management. By studying the course you'll be on an accredited route into the construction and real estate industries, with the opportunity to progress to chartered surveyor status. The course focuses on the two key areas of a building surveyor's work, building performance and pathology, and project management. The building performance and pathology strand involves inspections, evaluations, maintenance and remediation of defects in existing buildings. The management element covers the essentials of construction and building works, with an emphasis on extension and regeneration projects.

Full-time (year 1): law and ethics; property and construction economics; research methods and study skills; building technology; professional practice; building pathology; conversion, adaptation and care of buildings; contract administration; postgraduate dissertation/consultancy project/internship; part-time (year 1): research methods and study skills; building technology; building pathology; conversion, adaptation and care of buildings; postgraduate dissertation/consultancy project/internship (continued in year 2); part-time (year 2): law and ethics; property and construction economics; professional practice; contract administration; postgraduate dissertation/consultancy project/internship (continued from year 1).

Assessment methods

Assessment methods include: project work (individual and group based); independent written assignments and reports; research proposal and dissertation; seen and unseen written tests and examinations; poster presentations.
