Structural Engineering with Materials

Designed for students aspiring to senior management or technical leadership positions within structural engineering design practice, this course focuses on applying engineering principles in advanced materials behaviour and technical themes within structural engineering; the course is ideally suited to practising engineers, but it is also relevant for recent graduates planning a career in structural engineering; students on this course have the opportunity to: gain advanced knowledge in the design, construction and renovation of structures; become a specialist in the structural engineering field.

Course modules

Full time: research methods; contemporary themes in structural engineering; advanced strength of materials; finite element analysis; advanced structural analysis; advanced construction materials; analysis and design of surface structures; health monitoring and rehabilitations of surface structures; research project/dissertation; part time (year 1): research methods; contemporary themes in structural engineering; advanced strength of materials; finite element analysis; part time (year 2): advanced structural analysis; advanced construction materials; analysis and design of surface structures; health monitoring and rehabilitations of surface structures; research project/dissertation.

Assessment methods

Exams; coursework; preliminary questions: a set of short answer questions designed to reinforce the pre reading of the learning materials; learning portfolios to evidence students learning which would typically include: a study log; answers to self assessment questions and/or small notes and critical reviews, identified queries to be raised with lecturers; assignments: including essays, case studies, reports and designs.
