English Language Teaching

This course is designed for experienced English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) teachers, also referred to as TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages), who are seeking opportunities to enhance their professional development and career opportunities. This course integrates the theoretical and practical aspects of English language teaching. It aims to develop your in-depth knowledge and understanding of the links between teaching, academic research, and the theories of language learning and teaching.

Entry requirements

A good UK Honours degree (minimum 2.2) or equivalent and 2 years' full-time English language teaching / TESOL experience (or equivalent). Alternatively, 5 years' English language teaching / TESOL experience without a degree (non-graduates).

Course modules

This course is divided into modules, which are worth a number of credit points, and are separately taught and assessed. To get your degree you have to pass all modules, and collect 180 credit.

You will study the following modules: Analysing Language in Use; Theory and Practice in Language Teaching; Course Design and Assessment; Research Methods; Dissertation. You will also choose two of the following optional modules (option module availability is subject to demand): Blended Learning and Computer-Assisted Language Learning (CALL): Multimedia Applications in Language Learning; English for Professional Purposes; Materials Development; Teacher Education; Teaching English to Young Learners; Teaching Speaking, Listening; Teaching Reading and Writing; English for Academic Purposes; Intercultural Communication.

Assessment methods

The majority of the marks awarded for this course are for the dissertation. Students will have an individual supervisor allocated when offered a place on the course. Dissertation tutorials will take place between the student and their nominated supervisor, who will offer advice on developing appropriate study methods and provide feedback on drafts and the students dissertation.
