This course has pathways in biomedical sciences, medical microbiology, cellular pathology, clinical chemistry, haematology, and transfusion science; it is designed to further the students career in the healthcare profession, biomedical industry or in academia and has the potential to lead on to a professional doctorate.
A UK Honours degree (minimum 2.2) or equivalent in a relevant discipline; applicants should already be working in pathology or industrial biomedical laboratories or have a strong interest in biomedical science; applicants with relevant employment experience or other relevant qualifications may also be considered; international students need IELTS 6.5 (with minimum of 5.5 in reading, listening, speaking and writing) or TOEFL iBT 83 (with minimum reading:18, listening:17, speaking: 20, writing: 17); other English language qualifications may be taken into consideration.
Modules include: research project; scientific analysis, review and presentation; research methods; cancer and heart disease; pharmacology; molecular biology and DNA technology; cell culture and antibody technology; special topics in molecular biology; cellular pathology; clinical chemistry; haematology and transfusion science; medical microbiology; cytology.
You will undertake written assignments, online tests, formal examinations and poster presentation to test your acquisition of professional knowledge and skills. For those students who choose to study for the IBMS Specialist Diploma various work based learning tasks will be set, and evidence of completion is to be submitted along with a reflective log; the reflective log is submitted along with the specialist portfolio, which is required for the award of Institute of Biomedical Science Specialist Diploma.
