This course has pathways in cancer biology, cell biology, environmental biology, microbiology, molecular biology, neuroscience, and pharmacology; it is particularly relevant for students who: are recently qualified undergraduates and are looking for the professional skills needed to obtain a job in a bioscience company; are working in an organisation and want a Master's level qualification to give them a competitive edge; require the skills and experience needed to study for a research degree; are international students who would like to study abroad; would like the chance for extended research work in the laboratory of an experienced research academic.

Entry requirements

A UK Honours degree (minimum 2.1) or equivalent in a relevant discipline, plus laboratory experience gained through employment or an undergraduate research project; applicants with appropriate employment experience or other relevant qualifications will also be considered; international students need IELTS 6.5 (with minimum of 5.5 in reading, listening, speaking and writing) or TOEFL iBT 83 (with minimum reading:18, listening:17, speaking: 20, writing: 17); other English language qualifications may be taken into consideration.

Course modules

Core modules: research methods; research project. Optional modules: biology of disease; cell culture and antibody technology; enzyme technology and biocatalysis; fermentation technology; microbial physiology and genomics; molecular biology and DNA technology; neurobiology and neuropathology; pharmacology; special topics in molecular biology; business and bioethics.

Assessment methods

Taught modules are assessed by a variety of different types of course work including written assignments, oral presentations and poster presentations, and examinations; the research project involves the design, implementation and reporting of a major research task such as a thesis and presentation orally and/or as a poster.
