Coding Theory (M836)

Course covers the theory of error-detecting and error-correcting codes, in particular investigating constraints and bounds and introducing variety of linear and non-linear codes together with associated encoding and decoding procedures; it analyses structures and properties, investigates links between theory of error-correcting codes and other mathematical structures and examines the applicability of codes to real situations; it looks at concepts of optimal and perfect codes and examines the variety.

Entry requirements

Minimum 2nd class Honours degree in mathematics or another degree with a high mathematical content, such as engineering or theoretical physics; candidates must be registered for an OU qualification which includes this course.
