Psychology (F74)

This course aims to give students an advanced understanding of a wide range of fields in psychology including cognitive; social; forensic and counselling psychology. The course is designed to develop the skills needed to critically assess the claims that are made by psychological research, and to frame new questions in psychology. Students also develop the ability to independently source, select and review psychological research, evaluate its relevance for complex real-life issues, assess its validity and clearly communicate their findings in a sophisticated, reasoned manner to academic and non-academic audiences.

Entry requirements

To study our MSc in Psychology you must hold a UK Honours degree or equivalent. Although your 1st degree need not be in psychology, you must have the basic skills expected of a graduate in an equivalent area, such as social sciences. The foundation module will help equip you with the skills needed for postgraduate-level study, but it does not offer remedial undergraduate training if your knowledge and/or experience are inadequate. This is a rigorous masters degree requiring an aptitude for critical analytical thinking and for understanding the principles driving different research methods. Before you start your MSc you must be able to: write accurately, clearly and concisely; read large quantities of text quickly, accurately and critically; classify evidence precisely and assess its value and reliability
understand basic statistics e.g. measures of central tendency, variance, significance and effect size; argue logically and consistently; marshal evidence to support a logical argument. Your spoken and written English must be of an adequate standard for postgraduate study. If English is not your 1st language, we recommend that you will need a minimum score of 7 under the International English Language Testing System (IELTS). Please see the IELTS website for details.
