Supervision is available for research in the following main areas: 18th and 19th-century British painting; landscape and genre; representations of the countryside; 18th-century British art; the reception of 17th-century Flemish and Dutch art; art theory from the 15th to 19th centuries; 20th-century art in Europe and the US; ideology and the visual arts; architecture and modernism in Europe; art and architecture of Vienna c.1900; architecture of asylums and sanitoria; French visual cultures from the mid-18th to mid-19th centuries; art criticism; imagery and cultural politics of the French Revolution; the relationship between fine art and popular culture; travel; history of dress; gender in architecture; 16th and 17th-century English in architecture and sculpture; 19th and 20th-century architecture and theory; Italian art of the 15th and 16th centuries, especially Milanese and Northern Italian art; architecture and painting; Italian Renaissance art of the 15th and 16th centuries; Luca Signorelli; Raphael; Renaissance drawings; centre and periphery in Italian art.
MPhil or MPhil/PhD: 1st or 2nd Class Honours degree or equivalent; alternative qualifications considered individually; PhD: Master's degree in appropriate discipline (including research training and research project).
