This programme is designed to equip our students with a professional understanding of education in the foundation Stage and key stage 1, covering children's learning between the ages of 3 and 7. The programme develops our students' knowledge of relevant subject areas, learning needs and teaching approaches for both the foundation stage curriculum and years 1 and 2 of the primary phase. The students follow a carefully designed module in carly years pedagogy, as well as attending sessions across the curriculum with an Early Years focus. A substantial part (24 weeks) of each student's time on the programme is spent in partner schools where, under the close supervision of a mentor and supported by a university tutor, the students integrate their university-based learning with school-based learning. The programme has 2 integrated elements of training, the University-based element and the school-based element. University-based training feeds into school-based work and, in turn, various aspects of school-based training and experience feed back into the university programme. The amount of time required to undertake school-based training is a minimum of 24 weeks. The students are given opportunities to observe and work alongside expert practitioners in at least 2 schools, and work with pupils of differing abilities across the age range for which the students are being trained to teach.
Entry requirements are defined in part by the Department for Education and consist of: a recognised degree at 2.2, or degree equivalent. It is helpful, but not essential, for the content of your degree to be appropriate to education and the primary curriculum. Passes, or equivalent, at GCE O-Level, CSE grade 1, GCSE Grade C (or above) in English language, mathematics and science. There will be checks on English and mathematics competence at interview. Applicants need to give evidence of satisfactory work with groups of children, including a minimum of 2 weeks experience in a state primary school, prior to application. Satisfactory health and criminal record audits are also required. Candidates will not be invited for interview until they have completed the required Professional Skills Tests in literacy and numeracy.
Two of the three credit bearing modules within this programme are at level 7(Masters' Level): developing reflexive practice and research informed practice; developing professional practice; core curriculum studies, arts, humanities and PE and three periods of school experience teaching across consecutive age phases within at least two partnership schools are all compulsory elements of the programme.
Assessment is based on coursework, assignments, performance in school and the achievement of the Standards for the Award of Qualified Teacher Status.
