The course is built around 2 pathways - social and biological anthropology. Each pathway has 2 compulsory modules: 1 introductory and the other a more advanced theoretical module. For the rest of the course, in discussion with the course tutor, students put together a programme of 6 modules according to their aims and interests. To gain the award, students must pass 8 modular credits from the broad range of acceptable anthropology modules offered, including the 2 compulsory modules.

Entry requirements

Undergraduate degree or equivalent qualification is required; relevant experience may be acceptable; applicants may be admitted with dispensation from those requirements; if they can show that they have qualifications or experience that demonstrate knowledge and capabilities; students whose 1st language is not English: IELTS 6.0-7.0 (normally with 6.0 in reading and writing and a minimum of 5.5 in listening and speaking)

Course modules

Core modules: either; the study of biological or the study of social anthropology. And 1 of: the study of social anthropology theory or the study of methods and analysis in biological anthropology. Optional modules include: the study of anthropology of art; the study of anthropology of ritual; the study of European societies; the study of south Asian ethnography; the study of work and the Japanese; the study of personhood; gender and the body in contemporary japan; the study of humans and other primates; the study of primate societies; the study of human ecology; the study of human resource ecology; the study of research methods in social anthropology; the study of human evolutionary biology and geography; applied anthropology; minorities and marginality; class and conflict in japan; paleopathology; dawn of civilisation; advanced topics in social anthropology; hunter gatherer ecology; people and other animals; cognitive evolution; anthropology independent study.

Assessment methods

These include essays, book reviews, class presentations, fieldwork reports and examinations.
