Radiotherapy (post-registration)

Therapeutic radiography is a profession which is both intellectually and scientifically demanding; recent changes in defined areas of professional responsibility and social policy relating to health care have created increasing demands on radiographers who need to be able to formulate standards and treatment strategies as well as assume a greater degree of autonomy; to practice effectively, the radiographer needs to be able to analyse and evaluate the needs of health care delivery and to be aware of the roles and skills of other health care professionals.

Entry requirements

BSc (Hons) Therapeutic Radiography or equivalent. Where the Honours degree has not been studied in English, applicants are required to take an IELTS test receiving an overall score of 6.5 and no individual component score below 6.0. A satisfactory criminal records check will be required.

Course modules

Research methods; research project; subject specific modules: decision taking in radiotherapy planning for breast cancer; radiotherapy electronic portal image interpretation; ultrasound localisation procedures for electron boost clinical mark-up in radiotherapy; the clinical practice of vaginal vault brachytherapy; the principles of gynaecological brachytherapy; planning and delivery of gynaecological brachytherapy; ultrasound localisation procedures for intrauterine brachytherapy insertions; imaging modalities (computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, positron emission tomography) for therapeutic radiographers; image interpretation and pattern recognition for therapeutic radiographers; supplementary prescribing.

Assessment methods

There are various forms of assessment including case study analysis, portfolio of evidence of practice, essays, written examination and a project containing evidence of research method and analysis.
