Public Relations

This course develops an understanding of the strategic roles and functions of the professional communicator in a range of organisational contexts; in particular, students assess public relations as a management function and are expected to critically analyse contemporary public relations practices.

Entry requirements

A UK Honours degree or equivalent from a relevant subject area (arts, humanities or social sciences). Students without traditional honours degrees may be admitted (subject to interview) if they have other relevant qualifications and/or appropriate work experience. Students who have already been awarded a Chartered Institute of Public Relations (CIPR) Diploma receive 45 credits towards the course. Where the Honours degree has not been studied in English, students are required to take an IELTS test receiving an overall score of 6.5 with no individual component score below 6.0.

Critical reflections on public relations; the media in Britain; social research methods; internal communications; public relations planning; policy, communication and public affairs; placement; dissertation.

Assessment methods

Essays; written reports; examinations; student-led seminar presentations; online discussion submissions; research proposals; dissertation.
