Economics

The programme is designed to provide you with rigorous training in theoretical and applied economics. It is suitable for students who either intend to pursue doctoral studies or are planning a career as research economists in academia, the public sector, international institutions, economic consulting, the financial industry, think tanks, or other research centres. Students build on their undergraduate or postgraduate training by completing three compulsory modules in macroeconomics, microeconomics and econometrics both in the 1st and in the 2nd term. Students can also choose from a selection of option modules that cover a range of topics in applied economic research. Students also conduct original research to fulfil the substantial dissertation component of the degree.

Entry requirements

At least an upper 2nd Class Honours degree (2.1), or overseas equivalent, normally (though not necessarily) in economics or a related field. Students from mathematics, engineering and traditional sciences are encouraged to apply. A good knowledge of relevant statistical theory and mathematics is necessary for all applicants.

Course modules

In semester 1, students register for the following compulsory modules: Macroeconomics a; microeconomics b; econometrics a. In addition, students will also choose 1 of the 2 optional modules: Time series analysis; behavioural economics. In Semester 2, students register for the following compulsory modules: Macroeconomics b; microeconomics b; econometrics b. In addition, students will also choose 1 of the 3 optional modules: Labour and public policy; empirical macroeconomics; contracts and organisations.

Assessment methods

The grade for each module is assessed through coursework, which counts for 25 per cent of the final marks, along with a written exam in May for each course unit which counts for 75 per cent. The 10,000-word dissertation written over the summer counts for 4 modules.
