English Studies (Contemporary Writing)

The course brings together a variety of genres and critical approaches to contemporary literature, such that you will have the chance to explore fiction, poetry, and life writing, as well as debates in cultural theory and philosophy about the very nature and periodization of contemporaneity.

Entry requirements

An upper 2nd class Honours degree in English or such related fields as history, cultural studies and media studies. Where a North American marking scheme is used, applicants should have a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 3.2. Applicants without formal qualifications can be considered on an individual basis.

Course modules

Modules include: Writing and the present; resources for research; researching modern culture. Optional modules: african literary and textual cultures; imagining the modern caribbean; imagining south asia and its diaspora; j. m. coetzee: in the provinces of history; literature, science and technology; narrative, poetry and storytelling in the 21st century; peripheral modernities; postcolonialism, language and identity; the state of the novel; writing the east end.

Assessment methods

Assessment is by 4,000 word essays (worth 67% of your overall mark). You also complete a 15,000 word dissertation, worth 33% of your overall mark.
