Environmental Science

If you are interested in physical geography and/or environmental science, then this programme allows you to tap into the unique specialisms within our research team and create a tailored project and degree to match your own interests within those topics. The support available can be on a 1-to-1 basis and culminates in a substantial MSc thesis - ideal for those looking to continue on to PhD or to work independently as a consultant, for example.

Entry requirements

An upper 2nd Class Honours degree or higher in a relevant subject (e.g. biology, earth science, environmental science, geography) from a UK university or equivalent international qualification, together with 2 supportive references; candidates are expected to have good English language abilities and to meet the standard of the IELTS (or equivalent) at a level of 6.5.

Course modules

Modules include: Independent research project; environmental science research and practice; data analysis; project-specific research training; field methods for freshwater environmental science; flood risk management and modelling; biogeosciences and ecosystem services; desk study; river assessment and restoration. Project options: the environmental impact of historical landfill on the tidal river Thames; lateral moraine formation by Alpine valle glaciers: controls on processes, size and stability; 3D micro-scale analysis of glactectonic structures; semi-automated delineation of braided channel network from multispectral satellite imagery; rare species as endangered endemics or hidden invaders.

Assessment methods

Assessment is via coursework; the taught modules are delivered via lectures, seminars, one-to-one supervision, and attendance at research presentations by outside speakers and staff within the school; the majority of the programme is based around researching and presenting as a dissertation, a piece of independent research which is supervised by one of the physical geography lecturing staff.
