The course also offers you the opportunity to gain practical experience in both conducting and applying linguistics research. In addition to your dissertations, you will have the option to work as a research assistant on 1 of the department's ongoing research projects and or to pursue an industry partnership with one of our private or public sector partners.

Entry requirements

An upper 2nd Class Honours degree (or international equivalent) with a significant linguistics. English language requirement: IELTS 7.0 (with 7.0 in writing).

Course modules

Core modules include: Concepts and consequences in grammatical theory (formal linguistic pathway); sociolinguistic theory and methods (sociolinguistic pathway); trends in linguistic theory (all students); dissertation proseminar (all students); dissertation; option modules to choose from may include:; bilingualism; ethnography of communication; sex, gender and language; sociophonetics; language style and stylization; advanced syntactic theory; extensional semantics; experimental linguistics; from morpheme to meaning; formal approaches to variation; understudied languages and linguistic theory.

Assessment methods

In addition to coursework, you will also be assessed on a final research dissertation of 12000 words. The dissertation is an original research project on a linguistic topic that has been agreed with an academic advisor from the department. In the past, with guidance from their supervisors, MA students of linguistics have successfully published original research and presented at conferences. The dissertation is written over the summer and submitted at the end of August.
