Accounting

The main research areas are: Accounting change, particularly in public sector organisations; accounting education; accounting history; corporate governance and performance measurement (including non-financial performance measurement) in businesses; financial accounting and capital markets; governance, performance measurement/management and accounting in not-for-profit organisations, including charities, public sector organisations, social organisations, NGOs and credit unions. Particular strengths within these broad themes include: Accounting and performance measurement in multinational companies; accounting quality and corporate governance; accruals accounting in public sector organisations; ethics and accounting education; governance in charities; management/accounting change in the public sector; performance measurement/management in charities; performance measurement/management in public sector organisations; Private Finance Initiative (PFI) contracts and Public-Private Partnerships (PPP); short-termism and corporate governance; use of the case study approach in accounting education.

Entry requirements

Upper 2nd Class Honours degree from a UK university or equivalent qualification recognised by the University. International students must be able to demonstrate their proficiency in English in order to benefit fully from their programme of study or research; evidence of an IELTS score of 7.0 taken within the last 2 years, with not less than 5.5 in any component, or an equivalent qualification acceptable to the University is required. Non-EEA nationals must also satisfy UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) immigration requirements for English language for visa purposes.

Assessment methods

Students are expected to submit their thesis at the end of 3 years of full-time registration for PhD, or 2 years for MPhil (or part-time equivalent).
