This programme offers students the opportunity to explore a wide variety of research and composition fields including Irish music, 18th-century studies, Opera, performance and manuscript studies; words and music (leading composers� writings), set works, techniques and portfolio.
Normally a 2.1 Honours degree or equivalent qualification acceptable to the University, normally with Music as a main subject. Applicants should have an average of 60% in Music modules and appropriate specialism should be demonstrated. Composition applicants will be required to submit a portfolio directly to Professor Hellawell (contact the School for details); Musicology applicants will be required to submit a (self-written) 3000-word essay in English directly to Dr McCleave (contact the School for details). An interview may also be required. International students must be able to demonstrate their proficiency in English in order to benefit fully from their course of study or research. Non-EEA nationals must also satisfy UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) immigration requirements for English language for visa purposes.Evidence of an IELTS* score of 6.5, with not less than 5.5 in any component, or an equivalent qualification acceptable to the University is required. *Taken within the last 2 years.
A required single module (research methods), 3 further single modules from a menu, a double module (dissertation or edition and commentary); the following single modules are offered every year: Independent study; arts administration; recital; specialist areas covered in further modules include: source studies; 18th-century studies; Irish studies; opera studies.
Assessment methods include: Essays, projects, assessed seminar presentations, analytical composition projects, exhibition catalogue, assessed performance or lecture-recital.
