English Literary Studies

The programme is designed to provide students with the opportunity to develop an in-depth knowledge and understanding of modern literary theory and modern Anglophone literary cultures. It draws on the characters and complementaries of British, North American, Caribbean and Commonwealth writing in English, from the 18th-century to the beginnings of the 21st-century.

Entry requirements

MA: A good 2.1 Honours degree in English or joint or combined Honours with English as a major subject or equivalent qualification acceptable to the University. PG Diploma; Normally a 2.1 Honours degree in English or joint or combined Honours with English as a major subject or equivalent qualification acceptable to the University. All applicants are required to submit a piece of written work to assess their suitability for this programme. International students must be able to demonstrate their proficiency in English in order to benefit fully from their course of study or research. Non-EEA nationals must also satisfy UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) immigration requirements for English language for visa purposes. Evidence of an IELTS* score of 6.5, with not less than 5.5 in any component, or an equivalent qualification acceptable to the University is required. *Taken within the last 2 years.

Course modules

Core modules: Research methods: modern literary studies; the literatures of modernity; theorising modernity; dissertation; optional modules: contemporary American fiction; Georgic transformations in 18th-century poetry and culture; literary culture at the Fin de Sicle; Milton among the Moderns; modern Indian literature in English; private/public women; slavery, empire and abolition, 1660-1840; subjectivity and modernity; Victorian visual culture.

Assessment methods

Assessment is through: practical exercises; seminar presentations; plus dissertation of up to 15000 words on an approved topic.
