The aim of this programme is to provide students with a general knowledge of the principles and methods of social anthropology. There are 4 strands to the programme, which will depend on students' module choices. The different pathways for students are: Social anthropology (anthropology of Ireland); social anthropology (ethnomusicology); social anthropology (Irish music); social anthropology (new frontiers).
MA: Normally a 2.1 Honours degree in an appropriate subject or equivalent recognised qualification acceptable to the University. Graduate Diploma: Normally a 2.2 Honours degree or above in an appropriate subject (excluding Social Anthropology) or equivalent recognised qualification acceptable to the University. International students must be able to demonstrate their proficiency in English in order to benefit fully from their course of study or research. Non-EEA nationals must also satisfy UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) immigration requirements for English language for visa purposes. Evidence of an IELTS* score of 6.5, with not less than 5.5 in any component, or an equivalent qualification acceptable to the University is required. *Taken within the last 2 years.
Modules may include: Anthropological methods in context and practice; dissertation; anthropological perspectives; anthropology of Ireland; anthropology of music; ethnographic writing in social anthropology; frontiers of anthropology; Irish music; graduate diploma modules; key debates in anthropology; politics, law and power; project; reading and writing in contemporary ethnomusicology; religion and ritual.
Assessment methods include essays and a dissertation for students on the MA.
