Film and Visual Studies

There are 3 routes available: Students opting for the PhD (creative practice) route produce a body of supervised creative work, accompanied by a written critical treatment contextualising this work with the broader field of film and audiovisual cultures. The 2nd route (critical practice) offers students the opportunity to undertake advanced, original research in a current area of specialisation: cinema history and historiography; sound and film; world and comparative film studies; documentary film; and Irish film and audiovisual culture; the final route, the MPhil, also offers students the opportunity to undertake advanced research in either critical or creative practice in an area of specialisation.

Entry requirements

Upper 2nd Class Honours degree or equivalent; a diploma or equivalent qualification may be considered; applicants whose 1st language is not English are required to have either obtained their degree in a majority English speaking country or to have achieved a suitable IELTS (score of 6.5 overall, with at least 5.5 in each individual component) or TOEFL qualification.

Course modules

Research strengths include: Documentary and ethnographic film; interactive documentary; cinema history; experimental film; Irish film and audio-visual culture; relations between film and the visual arts; world and comparative film studies.
