International Relations

This programme is designed to analyse in a scholarly, critical and methodologically sophisticated manner various aspects of international relations. 4 taught modules are taught covering the evolution of international relations, issues of order, conflict and governance, and the trends toward globalisation, regionalisation and devolution.

Entry requirements

MA: Normally a 2.1 Honours degree or above, or equivalent qualification acceptable to the University in a Social Sciences, Humanities or Arts subject, or a 2.1 Honours degree or above, or equivalent qualification acceptable to the University in any subject with relevant professional experience.PG Diploma: Normally a 2.2 Honours degree (minimum 57 per cent) or above, or equivalent qualification acceptable to the University in a Social Sciences, Humanities or Arts subject, or a 2.2 Honours degree (minimum 57 per cent) or above, or equivalent qualification acceptable to the University in any subject with relevant professional experience. International students must be able to demonstrate their proficiency in English in order to benefit fully from their course of study or research. Non-EEA nationals must also satisfy UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) immigration requirements for English language for visa purposes. Evidence of an IELTS* score of 6.5, with not less than 5.5 in any component, or an equivalent qualification acceptable to the University is required. *Taken within the last 2 years.

Course modules

Core modules: Approaches to research design; international political economy; international security; theories and issues in international relations; dissertation; optional module: Conflict intervention; global terrorism; plus 1 from a list including: Conflict intervention (if not already taken); global terrorism (if not already taken); Ireland and Europe; issues in European governance; politics of the republic of Ireland.

Assessment methods

Assessment is through dissertation; examination; and continuous assessment. Diploma students only take coursework.
