Entry requirements

MA: Normally a 2.1 Honours degree or above, or equivalent qualification acceptable to the University in a Social Sciences, Humanities or Arts subject, or a 2.1 Honours degree or above, or equivalent qualification acceptable to the University in any subject with relevant professional experience. PG Diploma: Normally a 2.2 Honours degree (minimum 57 per cent) or above, or equivalent qualification acceptable to the University in a Social Sciences, Humanities or Arts subject, or a 2.2 Honours degree (minimum 57 per cent) or above, or equivalent qualification acceptable to the University in any subject with relevant professional experience. International students must be able to demonstrate their proficiency in English in order to benefit fully from their course of study or research. Non-EEA nationals must also satisfy UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) immigration requirements for English language for visa purposes. Evidence of an IELTS* score of 6.5, with not less than 5.5 in any component, or an equivalent qualification acceptable to the University is required. *Taken within the last 2 years.

Course modules

Students currently take 4 taught modules: Approaches to social science research and 1 from: Government and institutions of Northern Ireland; Politics of Northern Ireland; international security theories and issues of international relations; violence, terrorism and security; theories of ethnicity and ethnic conflict; representative government and public opinion in Europe; The European Union: History, institutions and theory; in the spring semester students are required to take 3 modules from: Ireland and Europe; politics of the Republic of Ireland; conflict intervention; global terrorism; international political economy; philosophy of conflict and war; carbon literacy for a low carbon society and economy; Ireland and Europe; issues in European governance; national ethnic and conflict management.

Assessment methods

Assessment methods include essays and continuous assessments and for Masters students: A dissertation of no more than 15,000 words.
