Social Research

The course is designed to provide a fundamental grounding in both quantitative and qualitative research skills along with the opportunity to specialise in more advanced training in quantitative research, qualitative research or in practical applications of research techniques. The programme consists of taught modules usually given during evenings or at weekends.

Entry requirements

Normally a 2.2 Honours degree or above or equivalent qualification acceptable to the University in one of the Social Sciences and/or appropriate social science research experience. A supporting reference may be required. International students must be able to demonstrate their proficiency in English in order to benefit fully from their course of study or research. Non-EEA nationals must also satisfy UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) immigration requirements for English language for visa purposes. Evidence of an IELTS* score of 6.5, with not less than 5.5 in any component, or an equivalent qualification acceptable to the University is required. *Taken within the last 2 years.

Course modules

Modules include: approaches to social research; the sources and construction of qualitative data; the sources and construction of quantitative data; theory and debates in social research; qualitative data analysis; quantitative data analysis: foundational; quantitative data analysis: intermediate; dissertation; advanced quantitative research methods; longitudinal analysis; advanced qualitative research methods; social science research online; new visual research methods; qualitative research in childhood and youth; conflict and change in northern Ireland: new sociological research; social research in a divided city; research religious transformations; social constructionism and social research researching emotions and social life; researching environmental issues.

Assessment methods

Dissertation.
