Human Geography (Society, Space and Culture)

This course pays particular attention to the interplay between the past and present in understanding social and cultural human geographies, and to providing a thorough research training in human geography.

Entry requirements

MA: Normally a 2.1 Honours degree or above or equivalent qualification acceptable to the University in Geography or a cognate discipline (eg History, Politics, Sociology, Anthropology, Archaeology). PG Diploma: Normally a high 2.2 Honours degree (57 per cent) or above, or equivalent qualification acceptable to the University in a relevant subject/discipline. Non-EEA nationals must satisfy the UK Border Agency (UKBA) immigration requirements for English language for visa purposes. Evidence of an IELTS* score of 6.5, with not less than 5.5 in any component, or an equivalent qualification acceptable to the University is required. *Taken within the last 2 years.

Course modules

Core modules: Critical human geographies; geographies of markets; popular geopolitics; methods and research design; geographies of security and securitisation.

Assessment methods

Each module is coursework based and assessed on the basis of essays, annotated bibliographies, scoping surveys, presentations and research proposals.
