Atomistic Simulation

The Atomistic Simulation Centre (ASC) at Queen's develops and uses a variety of computational and theoretical methods to study the structure and dynamics of molecules, liquids, solids and plasmas at the atomic scale. We are motivated by reference to experimental science. Most of our projects are driven and informed by direct interaction with laboratory-based colleagues at Queen's and internationally.

Entry requirements

A good 2nd Class Honours degree or an equivalent qualification; applicants whose 1st language is not English are required to have obtained their degree in a majority English speaking country or to have achieved a suitable IELTS (score of 6.0 with no less than 5.5 in each individual component) or TOEFL qualification.

Course modules

Areas of study: tackling complex problems with tools ranging from ab initio electronic structure to classical force fields, frequently combined with simulation tools like molecular dynamics and Monte Carlo; describing processes that involve energy exchange between electronic and nuclear motion; the ultra-fast dynamics and spectroscopic properties of molecules and materials subject to intense laser fields, and the irradiation of a variety of systems ranging from DNA to nuclear materials; developing integrated approaches that exploit theoretical understanding to rationally design processes and functional materials, which have the potential to generate disruptive technologies.

Assessment methods

Thesis.
