Advanced Mechanical Engineering

This course encourages a combination of advanced scientific knowledge, interpersonal, research and management skills. The curriculum will develop the postgraduate skills required for a successful transition to industry or a research role in academia. This will be achieved through the delivery of taught elements as well as the completion of novel, industrially relevant research projects.

Entry requirements

Normally a 2.2 Honours degree or equivalent qualification acceptable to the University in mechanical engineering or other suitable engineering discipline, with substantial mathematics and relevant engineering content acceptable to the School. A 2.1 Honours degree in mathematics or physics or equivalent qualification acceptable to the University may be considered. Applicants with non-standard qualifications will be considered on an individual basis. International students must be able to demonstrate their proficiency in English in order to benefit fully from their course of study or research. Non-EEA nationals must also satisfy UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) immigration requirements for English language for visa purposes. Evidence of an IELTS score of 6.0 taken within the last 2 years, with not less than 5.5 in any component, or an equivalent qualification acceptable to the University is required.

Course modules

Compulsory modules: Compressible flow and fluid machines; computational fluid dynamics; design and simulation integration; design for manufacture; finite element analysis; fracture mechanics; research methods; strength of materials. Optional modules: Biomaterials and medical devices; composite materials; composite structures; internal combustion engines; nuclear engineering; operations management in the new economy; polymer processing; solid mechanics for polymer engineering; sustainable transportation systems; turbomachinery. Dissertation.

Assessment methods

Written examinations and/or continuous assessment in each taught module. Written thesis for assessment of final MSc project.
