Environmental Engineering

This programme aims to develop the intellectual, practical and professional skills of the learner in the critical acquisition, analysis, interpretation and understanding of environmental engineering principles and issues.

Entry requirements

MSc: 2.2 Honours degree in a relevant engineering/scientific discipline (eg civil engineering, geology) with sufficient mathematical background (at least A-level, although undergraduate courses with a high mathematical content, eg statistics, can be acceptable); 2.1 or better is required for those with an insufficient mathematical background; applicants whose 1st language is not English require an IELTS score of 6.5, with no less than 5.5 in any component, or an equivalent qualification.

Course modules

Core modules include: Computer modelling of contaminated transport; contaminated land 1; contaminated land 2; environmental engineering 2; environmental engineering 1; hydrogeology 1; hydrogeology 2; elective modules: Business management; chemistry of natural waters; coastal engineering; disaster management and mitigation; engineering hydrology; environmental legislation for engineers and scientists; geographical information systems; geotechnics; introduction to renewable energies; waste management; water and waste-water treatment.

Assessment methods

Assessment is through written examination and/or continuous assessment; this includes a research project leading to report/thesis submission (report for PG Diploma submission in semester 2, thesis submission for MSc at the end of summer).

European Social Fund training awards (limited number available; applicants must be nationals and residents of any EC member state, under 25 years of age on date training starts and unemployed prior to training; awards cover maintenance and fees; minimum academic standard lower second class honours degree or equivalent).
