Building Information Modelling Project Management

This programme is designed to allow our students to develop: Practical and professional skills in the critical acquisition, analysis, interpretation and understanding of building information modelling in the context of project management within the built environment; a holistic approach by integrating the technical aspects and underlying knowledge of building information modelling through design, engineering and construction with financial, legal, IT, commercial leadership and managerial skills of business administration in the management of simple to complex projects from project conception through to construction, operation and maintenance; critical and analytical problem solving skills across a broad range of building information modelling orientated transferable skills that relate to information technology, computing support systems, teamwork, group work, and personal presentations and interactions to prepare graduates for employment within the remit of project managers with a working knowledge of the BIM process and underlying capabilities; the ability to apply appropriate theoretical and practical management methods under the remit of Building Information Modelling practices and procedures, to provide support analysis and solutions to design, engineering and construction problems.

Entry requirements

MSc: A 2.2 Honours degree or above in a relevant Science, Engineering, Management or Social Science discipline, or equivalent qualification acceptable to the University. PG Diploma: normally a 3rd Class Honours degree in a relevant discipline (e.g. Architecture, engineering or social science), or equivalent qualification acceptable to the University. International students wishing to apply to Queen's University Belfast (and for whom English is not their 1st language), must be able to demonstrate their proficiency in English in order to benefit fully from their course of study or research. Non-EEA nationals must also satisfy UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) immigration requirements for English language for visa purposes. Evidence of an IELTS* score of 6.5, with not less than 5.5 in any component, or an equivalent qualification acceptable to the University is required. *Taken within the last 2 years.

Course modules

Both MSc and PG Diploma students are required to complete the following 8 taught modules: Building information modelling in practice; construction law 1: Contract law, tort and evidence; design coordination; procurement and contract administration; project coordination, planning and control; research methods for managers; strategic management and BIM integration; technical BIM Implementation. Individual Research Project (MSc Only): For full-time students the final 4 months of the programme (Semester 3) will be dedicated to an individual research project. Part-time students may arrange their programme, subject to timetabling and arrangement with the Programme Co-ordinator.

Assessment methods

Assessment is carried out in January and May. Overall ratio of coursework to unseen examinations is 70:30; plus written dissertation/thesis
