Psychology (Clinical Psychology)

The aim of this Doctorate is to prepare students for professional employment as clinical psychologists in the personal health and social services and for research and teaching in clinical psychology.

Entry requirements

A 2.1 Honours degree or above in Psychology or an equivalent qualification acceptable to the University and British Psychological Society, as the graduate basis for chartered membership. Those with a 2.2 Honours degree or an equivalent qualification acceptable to the University may also apply if they have also achieved a postgraduate qualification (eg Diploma/Master's) relevant to Clinical Psychology. As the programme typically has in excess of 200 applicants per year who meet these essential criteria, application forms are shortlisted on the basis of desirable criteria. These are outlined in selection information but include evidence of 4 competencies: psychological knowledge and thinking; research skills; personal and professional development; and interpersonal skills. Typically 48 applicants are shortlisted for interview. Applicants for whom English is not their 1st language must satisfy University requirements for English language, by providing evidence of an IELTS* score of 7.0, with not less than 6.5 in any component, or an equivalent qualification acceptable to the University is required. *Taken in the last 2 years.

Modules include: advanced psychological interventions; applied research 1, 2 and 3; assessment and formulation; clinical presentations of adult and childhood; personal and professional development 1, 2 and 3; placement 1 foundations of psychological therapy; placement 2; placement 3; placement 4 specialist services; placement 5 specialist services; psychological assessment; psychological therapies 1 and 2; specialist clinical presentations.

Assessment methods

Placement performance, academic and clinical coursework, research portfolio, examinations, in vivo examinations, and final research viva; the dissertation is between 15,000-20,000 words.
