Psychotherapy and Counselling

This programme provides a basic training in psychotherapy and counselling theory and skills; it combines academic, practical and experiential components within a supportive and challenging environment; as well as exploring the main therapeutic theories, students examine philosophical and spiritual perspectives and cross-cultural approaches; students learn about the practical and ethical issues of working with clients in a variety of situations.

Entry requirements

Previous counselling training or experience is not required, nor is a 1st degree or its equivalent; life experience, a mature attitude and a capacity for self-reflection are necessary qualities; students with varied background and experience are welcome; admission to the programme is based partly on the supporting documents sent in alongside the application, and partly on an interview with the course leader.

Course modules

Modules include: a way of working (overview of humanistic therapy); introduction to gestalt therapy; describing ourselves (the fundamentals of phenomenology); society, biology and reality; facing the unknown (consciousness and unconsciousness); putting theory into practice; working with loss and bereavement.

Assessment methods

Evaluation is based on assessment of participation throughout the course and on the successful completion of: 3 pieces of coursework; a brief process report; an essay about your personal and professional development throughout the course; a theoretical paper.
