Psychotherapy and Counselling

This course provides an intermediate pre-professional training, and includes taught, clinical, experiential and self-directed components; upon completion students will be able to go on to the final stage of training that leads to eligibility for UKCP membership as an integrative or existential psychotherapist.

Entry requirements

Bachelor's degree in any discipline as well as a Certificate in psychotherapy and counselling of a minimum of 120 hours; at least 6 months� professional experience in an allied area (such as nursing, social work, teaching, human resources or mediation) or in a voluntary capacity seeing individuals in a helping or supportive context (such as befriending, mentoring or telephone helpline counselling); applicants without an undergraduate degree are required to have at least 2 years� experience of working professionally in an allied area or in a voluntary capacity; experience of personal therapy is desirable, but not required; applicants will be expected to attend an interview before an unconditional offer can be made; fluency in English is also required.

Course modules

Modules include: clinical placement; contemporary theory and practice in existential psychotherapy; contemporary theory and practice in integrative psychotherapy; contemporary theory and practice in psychoanalytic psychotherapy; existential-phenomenological approaches; humanistic and integrative approaches; psychoanalytic approaches; research methods in psychotherapy.

Assessment methods

Assessment is continuous and based on: academic class presentations; academic essays; personal development reports demonstrating appropriate self-evaluation and self-reflection including level of participation in group work; participation in discussions in academic seminars, skills training sessions and training supervision; practice skills session video (year 1 only); clinical process reports and a case study as well as clinical placement feedback (year 2 only).
