Social Work

This course will introduce you to the values, skills and competencies required for the practice of social work. It provides graduates with the opportunity to train as social workers to the standard prescribed as qualifying level by the Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC).

Entry requirements

You should have a degree in a social science discipline. Other qualifications and experience will be considered, with entry being subject to the University's judgement that the person has reasonable expectation of being able to fulfil the requirements of the award. An acceptable level of numeracy in maths is normally required, as is evidence of computer literacy at the level required for the European Computer Driving Licence. Some experience in a caring or closely allied field is normally required, as well as basic knowledge of the UK legal and political system.

Course modules

Modules include: Contexts of social work practice: law, sociology and social policy; development, behaviour and interpersonal processes; social work theory, professional ethics and research methods; readiness for practice; assessed practice and analysis 1; community care and vulnerable user groups; change process, group care contexts and institutional experience; criminal justice, children and families; substance misuse; assessed practice and analysis 2; dissertation.
